    This site is dedicated to anyone who enjoys the sound of an engine, the smell of fuel burning, the adrenaline of tackling challenges while crushing those gears.

    We are not biased towards one type of vehicle, make or model. We can appreciate the passion no matter what you are working on, driving, admiring, polishing, designing.

    Gear Crushers are for those of us that want to break the mold and have one site that has something for everyone since many of our passions can easily cross. An engine or trans or axle or tires etc may work on something else in a completely different group.  Troubleshooting could also be similar.

    I don’t find it fair that we have to choose “exactly” what we have to be on different websites or groups even though our passion may stretch amongst multiple types of vehicles so here you go. Gear Crushers covers anything that runs fuel.  Community driven. Cool logo. Non-biased fun.=

    Enjoy as we keep improving the site!  We are under construction since our site was hacked and destroyed.  We moved to a more solid website and its now also encrypted using an SSL cert so we should have a better shot at keeping up and running.  We also learned to back up the site so nightly backups are happening now.

      The question that seems to popup a lot is whether or not to get a lift pump.  What happens if the lift pump fails, am I stuck?  Can I get filters anywhere or is it online order only? Why spend the money? How long will the pump last before it needs to be replaced?  Do I need a sump installed on my tank if I get a lift pump?

      I personally owned both the Air Dog on my 2005 GMC LLY and the FASS on my 2007 GMC LBZ.  Before I get into my personal preference, let's go with the fact checker (side by side)

      Best-selling brands produced in China

      According to China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (C.A.A.M), automakers in China delivered 28,226,616 passenger and light commercial vehicles in 2017. Volkswagen remained the best-selling brand followed by Honda. In 2017, Geely surprised everyone by rocketing to become the third best-selling brand in China and the top Chinese brand in the market. Korean and American brands suffered from lackluster sales with Hyundai dropping from the top ten and GM and Ford both falling below local Chinese brands. Below is a breakdown of the deliveries by brand.

      The best selling specific model in 2017 was the Wuling Hong Guang minivan made in partnership with SAIC-GM, formerly known as Shanghai General Motors Company Ltd. In fact, five of the top-15 models were produced by SAIC-GM. Volkswagen had three models in the top-15, including the number-two Lavida while Geely, Great Wall, and Guangzhou Automotive Corp (GAC) models accounted for several models on that list. Number three of the top-15 belonged to the Nissan Bluebird Sylphy/Sylphy, number four to the Haval H6 and number five to the VW New Santana.

      When the LBZ was introduced to replace the LB7, the LB7’s injector issues had long been solved and the overheating issues associated with the LLY were a thing of the past. This engine’s beefier block casting, stronger connecting rods, higher pressure common-rail fuel system and updated ECM arguably made it the most powerful, drivable, reliable and tunable Duramax to date. Right out of the box, the LBZ produced 360hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. During this time frame (’06-‘07), these numbers not only outperformed the 6.0L Power Stroke’s 325hp and 570 lb-ft, but they beat out the 325hp and 610 lb-ft figures put up by the 5.9L Cummins as well. The LBZ was also the first Duramax to be coupled to the six-speed Allison 1000 automatic, which proved capable of handling more power than the five-speed version that preceded it.

      Diesel enthusiasts longingly remember the LBZ as the last Duramax built before the modern day emissions crunch kicked in, which spawned pollution control technology that reduced fuel economy and greatly hampered long-term engine durability.  Arguably the most highly sought after Duramax ever built is the LBZ Duramax.

      • More meat exists in the lower section (big end) of the rod than what you’ll find on LB7
      • The beefier I-beam style rods bring more mass to the rotating assembly
      • Connecting rods were the strongest found in any Duramax up to that time
      • GM cast slightly more webbing into the main bearing regions of the LBZ’s gray-iron block for added horsepower and torque

      Unfortunately nothing is perfect and in this case the LBZ pistons weren’t up to the task of surviving in higher horsepower applications.  The cast-aluminum pistons are highly susceptible to cracking.  The LBZ piston’s use of wrist pin bushings is also believed by many to be a contributing factor in OEM piston failure, along with a thinner wrist pin being utilized.

      When a piston lets go, you definitely know it, as it’s accompanied by a nasty miss, excessive blow-by and smoke out the exhaust.

    5. This blog will start as a story of how I use to have many jobs but life was passing me by as I was on a constant spiral down from any life whatsoever. Including missing my family and friends it just lost its appeal.  My thought process was work as much as I can while I can because you never know when you just can't anymore.  Well that was nice but all you do is spend more money instead of save the extra money or try to get ahead by possibly paying off the monster debt.  Not me, I apparently have a burning hole in my pocket when I put a dollar in it.  Lot changes with your perspective when you go down to one job, one source of income.

      Sooo, the hunt began to try and find ways to save money which started with moving away from Chase Bank which kept increasing interest rate on my credit card even though my credit score was in the high 700's and sometimes would hit 800 something.  Also odd since I've been with the bank forever but I'm learning slowly that I'm more of a credit union kind of guy so I moved 99% of my finances to a Credit Union where there credit card is only 5.9% and they are willing to give me great loan rates.  What?  And they are more than helpful.  I have tried this before but really really didn't like the web/app interface and since we do most of our banking online, it was rough. Chase has a great app and web interface but seriously there rates are way too high and no loyalty to customers that give them our money to hold onto.  So two words for ya Chase, "See ya"!

      Now finances moved over to a credit union, a little bit of savings is already working in my favor (wow was I paying a ton in interest with my chase card).  My next big expense is the house, gotta have that and no sense of changing the house payment since interest rates haven't really gone down and I really don't want to start over with closing fee's, reset the 30 year fix mortgage count down back to 30 years..  its okay.  Next would be my RAM truck payment which is no more than $700/month.  I had a 2013 RAM and loved it but it started to rust (which is pretty common in Michigan) but I couldn't take it so with less than a year to pay it off I bought a 2018 RAM 2500 Limited (so fully loaded).  I never really loved the truck but thought I would eventually.  Now its been two years and it tows just as good as my 2013 with that cummins diesel purring but way too many electronics for this guy. Its time to find something else that can tow our 10,500lb RV trailer and occasionally my car hauler trailer and even sometimes my excavator trailer but most often my 25' enclosed car hauler trailer that holds our ATVs and SxS.  I just don't like anything anyone builds today.  It feels and drives like garbage so went to google and started searching for tow vehicles and what is everyone most happiest with and just about every website kept popping up Suburbans with the 8.1L.  Similar torque and horsepower as the Duramax Diesel with a few mpg less in the 8.1L for fuel econonomy but let's be real, Unleaded will always be cheaper than diesel and every mechanic can work on a gasoline engine and probably has the parts at a local store but not the same could be said about a diesel.  Good luck going to anyone but a dealer to work on it, fuel is more expensive probably 90% of the time and repairs are monstorus.  Let's also not forget you have to put cow pee in called DEF unless you delete DEF from your truck but you'll loose any warranty.  So the negative to an 8.1L is crappy fuel economy and that's it.

      So I began my search for what year(s) are the best Suburbans and they kept coming back to the 2000-2006 years.  With the 8.1L you can pull 12,500lbs (DANG!).  Sometimes you are lucky and get the Alison Transmission but most of the time you'll end up with the heavy duty 4L80e transmission.

      I found a super clean 2003 in California at Affordable Imports Auto Sales so tomorrow I'm flying out of Detroit Metro International Airport and landing in LAX around 10:20am tomorrow and catching a Lyft down to Murrieta to pick up my new/used Suburban.

My wife and I are freezing our asses off in our own home unless I crank the furnace up to 68 degrees which is crazy to think.  I remember as a kid we were never cold in the house but we always had a wood burner in the home (most of the homes it was in the basement).  It would get some warm in the house that windows had to be opened in the home in the middle of winter to let out some of the hot and let in some of the cool weather.

      So now I'm a grown up and freezing my ass off in this home that was built in the 60's I thought of applying the same thought process that worked when I was a kid.  Get a wood burner in the basement.

      I originally wanted to replace the wood stove upstairs that came with the home since it doesn't put out a lot (or really any) heat.  Especially since we spend most of our time in the living room upstairs but when they came out to look at what we have they pointed out that we should stop using it Immediately.

      Apparently whoever put the wood insert in trimmed the outside of it with wood trim which is charred on the back from burning from the heat of the wood stove.  So in short, its about to start on fire like charcoal.  To correct the hearth that is too short, all the wood trim, wood mantle, etc I'm looking close to $10,000 so probably not going to happen.  My thought was to pull it out and put a gas stove/insert in its place so I don't have to do as much work.  The company I talked to said they could pull the stove out for $400 but some serious cost to fix everything.  That will have to be maybe next year.

      Since upstairs is a bust, concentrating on the downstairs which uses the same chimney so its directly below the living room.

      My thought is it would at least warm the wood floors in the winter and give the impression its warmer.  And we do know that warm air rises so there is a good chance it could heat most of the 1800 sq ft 1960 home on half basement and half crawl (the crawl space is below all the bedrooms)

      I was bouncing back and forth between a Lopi and a Blaze King for manufacturers of wood stove.  My parents has a Lopi wood stove and it was there favorite of all the brands they had but that was a long time ago before they started getting strict with emissions.

      Researching burn times and warranty information the Blaze King on paper is the clear winner so I chose a Blaze King Princess Insert which will get installed on the 23rd of January 2018 (brochure is attached along with manual)

      Vortec 8100 Big Block V8 Outpowers Competitor’s V10s

      The Vortec 8100 (L18) is essentially a new engine. Nearly 80 percent of its parts have been redesigned. Yet, its foundation is one of the most celebrated engine components in automotive history, GM’s Big Block V8. The Big Block even competes against diesels in highly demanding marine and industrial applications – in essence giving Silverado and Sierra HD customers a lot more truck engine for the money than they realize.

      The new Vortec 8100 shares its predecessor Vortec 7400’s valve and bore centers and bore diameter. But its stroke has been increased by 9.4 mm (.37 in.) for a higher displacement and more power. The result is awesome: the Vortec 8100 out-muscles even Ford and Dodge’s V10s!

      If there is heavy towing or hauling to be done, this is the perfect powerhouse for the job. An impressive 90 percent of its peak torque is available from 1700 rpm to 4300 rpm. And when it comes to acceleration, this engine leaves its competitors in the dust, as the following comparison of comparably loaded, automatic transmission-equipped models shows.

      Even with the Vortec 8100’s awesome power and performance, its specific fuel economy (per liter of displacement) is four percent better (than the 6.5 liter).

      And the Vortec 8100 operates more cleanly; it already complies with 2002 "clean-fuel-fleet" requirements. Its new design also permits running on alternative fuels, including liquid propane gas (LPG) or compressed natural gas (CNG), without requiring any special valves and seats. California versions of the engine are equipped with Air Injection Reaction (AIR) and pup catalytic converters to meet that state’s more stringent emissions requirements.

      The Vortec 8100’s 200,000-mile (322,000-km) durability testing includes rigors that no other gasoline engine in its class have been put through; they include running at wide-open throttle for 300 straight hours!

      Its low maintenance design requires only normal oil and filter changes during the first 100,000 miles (160,000 kms). Oil changes are based on actual need. The Powertrain Control Module records engine temperature and length of operation at a given temperature, then indicates the need for an oil change with an easy-to-read "Change Engine Oil" LCD message in the Driver Message Center. The driver is also alerted to "Check Engine Oil Level," when necessary.

      Long-life engine coolant is good for five years or 150,000 miles (240,000 kms). A standard coolant level sensor warns the driver of a drop in coolant level. If a catastrophic event causes a total coolant loss, the engine protects itself against damage by running on alternate banks of four cylinders and using cool air to cool itself, enabling the driver to reach a service station.

      Advanced Design Features
      The Vortec 8100’s rigid cylinder block uses four-bolt main bearings to optimize crankshaft rigidity. The nodular iron crank is internally balanced and counterweighted to minimize internal stresses and bearing loads. The bearings are produced with a new alloy (A260) that increases their life and eliminates the use of environmentally hazardous cadmium. An elastic material called Vamac is used in place of rubber to support the crankshaft’s torsional rigidity: it increases both damping capability and durability. A change in the firing order (to 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3) reduces main bearing wear and stress on the crank by seven percent.

      So what the heck is Gear Crushers all about?  In short, we have so many passions that we couldn't pick just one.  We love all of it!  Too many websites and clubs are focused on one passion but we like everything.  We believe we can love more than just one passion.  

      How many times have you gone to a website and invested time in adding and contributing to the community to have them change or just call it quits.  Or you belong to a website that never gets updated.. yawn.  We are tired of being involved with communities / websites that the admins just don't keep up to date with patches or no involvement because the community has given up on them.

      We at Gear Crushers love everything and that isn't a passion that just goes away.  I don't want to have to join multiple different clubs because I enjoy different toys. Most everything is similar (engine, trans, suspension, etc). I enjoy not just offroad but street racing, boats, rv's, ATV's, Motocross, Motorcycles, etc..  This site "Gear Crushers" is exactly that.  We want to give a home for everyone.  They all have similarities that could benefit you or could benefit someone else.  Engines, Transmissions, Axles, etc..  but feel free to create your own club to advertise your site (events for your community).  People may be browsing Gear Crusher Clubs by location and could find that you are in their area.

      Also I think we have a kick ass logo that could be used by Bike, Car, Truck, Offroad, Boat communites..

      Let's focus on all that is cool and crush them gears.

      This site is dedicated to anyone who enjoys the sound of an engine, the smell of fuel burning, the adrenaline of tackling challenges while crushing those gears.

      We are not biased towards one type of vehicle, make or model. We can appreciate the passion no matter what you are working on, driving, admiring, polishing, designing.

      Gear Crushers are for those of us that want to break the mold and have one site that has something for everyone since many of our passions can easily cross. An engine or trans or axle or tires etc may work on something else in a completely different group.  Troubleshooting could also be similar.

      I don’t find it fair that we have to choose “exactly” what we have to be on different websites or groups even though our passion may stretch amongst multiple types of vehicles so here you go. Gear Crushers covers anything that runs fuel.  Community driven. Cool logo. Non-biased fun.
