HEIM MAINTENANCE TIPS

A DIRT WHEELS FAN WRITES: “Is there any way to stop those darn Heim joints from squeaking? My Heims sound like a pack of baby seals! I have used WD-40 but it doesn’t last. Then I tried PB Blaster but it attracted dirt. Then I used a chain lube. It lasted a lot longer but it attracted more dirt, and the joints looked ugly with the build up of the chain lube. On line, it was recommended that I try Trick Shot. The squeak went away, for a while. Next was Kroil. About the same performance as Trick Shot. Finally, I tried Tri-Flow. That seemed to work the longest. But after a washing, the squeak came back. Boss, there has to be a lubricant that will penetrate and stay in place and not collect dirt and look ugly, right?” – Tanya Taylor, Laurinburg, NC

OUR PRO ANSWER: WD-40 is not a lubricant, it is a water displacer. PB Blaster is a penetrating lubricant that doesn’t really stick. Trick Shot is another penetrating oil, just with more lubricating properties. Kroil is another petroleum-based penetrating oil. Tri-Flow is a good lubricant, but the Teflon can be washed away as you have seen. My preference is a chain lube made by Maxima, called Chain Wax. (https://maximausa.com/products/chain-wax) It is paraffin (wax) based. It applies as a thin fluid, then the fluid sets up to a non-sticky waxy consistency that stays in place and keeps the dirt out of the chain or Heim joint in your case. And it resists washing away. That is my choice but everybody has their own opinion as to the best lubricant. It also wouldn’t hurt to apply the children’s balloon hack as a rubber seal to keep the elements away from the Heim joints after lubricating.
