RJ HAMPSHIRE INTERVIEW: LAST WORDS BEFORE THE 2024 SALT LAKE CITY SUPERCROSS FINALE

RJ HAMPSHIRE INTERVIEW: LAST WORDS BEFORE THE 2024 SALT LAKE CITY SUPERCROSS FINALE

If you look up the word grit in the dictionary, you may see a photo of RJ Hampshire. The Rockstar Energy Husqvarna rider has persevered through so much to get where he is–tied for the 250 West Coast Supercross Championship. As 250 West Coast Supercross runner-up (to Jett Lawrence) last year, RJ knows it is his time. Although he has won three rounds this year, a couple of poor finishes slowed his points tally. Now battling for the title with Levi Kitchen of the Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki team, Hampshire knows he has to take the Salt Lake City win. We caught up with RJ while he was putting in some press day laps.

RJ, IS THERE ANY REAL STRATEGY FOR SALT LAKE CITY FINALE? Yes, I just need to focus on myself, and not really think about the weekend too much. If I get a good start, I just ride my own race–that is what I’m really looking for.

Hampshire has three wins so far, Anaheim 1, Glendale and Nashville.

YOU HAVE MADE THIS SEASON VERY EXCITING. Yes, and I suppose that has somewhat been my style. I never seem to do anything the easy way; I need to make it exciting. I’m just trying to enjoy this feeling. I want to just have fun and ride my dirt bike.

RJ Hampshire’s worst finish this year came at the San Francisco mud race. He finished 13th and Levi was second place. Levi made up 9 points on RJ in that single race.

LEVI AND YOU ARE FRIENDS, BUT I SUPPOSE THAT WON’T MATTER SATURDAY NIGHT. No, it’s a championship battle, and anything goes. No one truly understands how hard it is to get to this point (championship battle). As I said, I just need to focus on myself, and hopefully nothing goes crazy. I just need to ride my own race.

IT APPEARS THAT YOU ARE RIDING BETTER THAN EVER. You are right; this is probably the best I ever have ridden, but I got a lot more to go. I need to improve on the mental side a bit, know that I can’t be the guy winning week in and week out.

FINISHING UP, WITH THE UPCOMING OUTDOOR SERIES, ANY CHANCE YOU WILL BE ON A 450? No, I am racing motocross in the 250 class. There is still more to accomplish here.
