Overlanding can be pretty rough on gear: the dust, the dirt, the weather and the constant packing, unpacking and repacking can do a number on your favorite items. This is especially true for anything soft you’re bringing along — like blankets, jackets, hammocks and the like. If you’re sick of having to replace your camping blankets every few years due to holes, stains, singe marks and more, Rumpl just released a product that will solve all those problems: the Overlanding Mat.
Rumpl’s latest launch is built with the overlanding and camping market in mind, and although you may be thinking, “It’s just a mat — how complicated can it be?” — let me tell you, this baby has some very helpful and durable features built into its design. Read on to learn more.

So, what’s so special about the Rumpl Overlanding Mat?
The Rumpl Overlanding Mat was designed with tough environments in mind, and has the chops to handle whatever you throw at it with ease. (Besides something sharp — don’t throw anything sharp at your mat, please!) This premium mat features ample padding, so you can use it under a tent for a little extra cushion. It’s designed with a fully waterproof bottom shell that keeps any moisture from soaking through, and a PFAS-free durable water repellant finish on the top layer. Want to sit outside but it rained yesterday? No worries — the Mat will keep you dry and comfortable. The quilted top, constructed with durable 250D recycled nylon soft-touch twill, is soft enough to take a nap on, but will stand up to rocks, roots and other impediments found on the ground. The Overlanding Mat even comes with corner staking loops for extra utility.

This multi-purpose mat is designed for everything from bluebird days on the slopes to sandy, rocky beaches, and everywhere in-between, which I consider ideal for the varying terrain that comes with overlanding. If you never know where you’re headed next, it pays to invest in gear that will be prepared for any environment. When you’re not using your Overlanding Mat, you can easily stuff it into the included StuffleBag carrying case that comes with every blanket, so it’s not draped all over your backseat.

There’s one more bonus I forgot to mention — the Overlanding Mat comes with a 100 night exchange policy, which means you could use this baby for 90 nights, decide you don’t like it all that much, and return it. No muss, no fuss.
What’s not-so ideal about the Overlanding Mat?
There is one caveat to all this, and that’s the price. Although as overlanders, we’re used to shelling out the big bucks for the most rugged and capable gear, spending $130 bucks on a blanket does seem a tad steep. If you appreciate the engineering that went into this Rumpl blanket it makes more sense, but paying more than $100 for a mat may not appeal to some campers. If that’s you, here are a couple cheaper options that you may like. Just be warned: while they may come with a smaller price tag, these also don’t come with the Rumpl engineering and 100-night trial I’ve mentioned above, so you may end up spending more in the long run, anyway.
