What BMW’s next-gen X3M might look like

It’s no secret that crossovers sell in swarms these days. Blending the practicality of an SUV with the drivability of a car is a compromise that satisfies the needs of many, but disappoints enthusiasts who prefer station wagons with similar practicality and unspoiled handling dynamics.

Crossovers have become BMW’s breadwinners

Regardless of enthusiasts’ complaints, BMW has sold over 3 million X3s throughout the model’s lifespan, and in 2023, the X3 was BMW’s best-selling model. Other BMW “X” models don’t fall far behind. Although the lion’s share of X3 sales has largely consisted of more basic variants, BMW hasn’t neglected enthusiasts in its volume crossover menu with the inclusion of the X3M.

Using generative text-to-image AI with official press images as canvases, we imagine what the M version of BMW’s fourth-generation X3 could look like and speculate on its potential features and options. The following renders combing the styling elements of the all-new 2025 BMW X3 with those of contemporary M models.

The BMW X3M is a family crossover for driving enthusiasts

BMW’s X3M aimed to prove that an enthusiast crossover was not an impossibility, thus combining all the practicality elements of an X3 with all the performance capabilities of an M3, without compromise. In fact, in its adoption of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive before its saloon cousin, the X3M proved that it could even achieve superior performance, launching from 0-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds – 0.3 seconds quicker than the M3.

For the X3’s newest generation, its overall proportions have been increased, expanding on the crossover’s practical elements. Enhanced technology and interior design aim to improve comfort and safety. For the upcoming M variant, however, the X3 will have a more focused aim of improving performance.

X3M blends contemporary style and convenience with old-school thrills

BMW’s performance offering employs a larger-displacement power plant compared to its Mercedes-AMG classmate, the plug-in hybrid, turbocharged 2.0L straight-four powered GLC 63 S E-Performance. Although the AMG offers superior power, its complexity and lack of character has earned it an unfavourable reputation with fans.

BMW, on the other hand, has stuck to its roots, offering multiple variants of its legendary S58 engine – a twin-turbocharged, high-performance, 3.0L straight-six – across its M lineup. The next-generation X3M will likely yield an S58 in a similar state of tune to the M3 Touring, which produces 503 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque.

Thrust would be routed to all four wheels through a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission using BMW’s advanced xDrive all-wheel drive system. BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension system would lend a hand in terms of cornering stability and responsiveness, and optional carbon ceramic brakes would bring things to a rapid halt.

An extensive list of optional features would follow suit in BMW’s lineup, offering tailored performance and style

BMW offers a wide array of unique features that enhance the experience of owning one of their vehicles. Ranging from upgraded comfort and technology to improved performance, BMW has a solid understanding of what its buyers want – and don’t want.

The next-generation BMW X3M will likely offer similar optional features found on the current M3. Packages such as the M Carbon Package, Advanced Driver Assistance Package, and Premium Package, are a given, but the ability to upgrade almost everything from adaptive LED headlights and panoramic moonroofs to carbon ceramic brakes and M carbon bucket seats would ensure each X3M will suit its buyer’s desires.

Is the BMW X3 deserving of consideration from enthusiasts?

Regardless of BMW’s attempts to inject its best-selling crossover with M performance charisma and excitement, there will always be enthusiasts who scoff at the idea of a performance crossover. The absence of the M3 Touring in the North American market surely doesn’t help, as many enthusiasts resent the X3M for its bulky proportions and heightened stature when compared to its more agile station wagon counterpart.

Final thoughts

Perhaps the X3M can fill the gap left by the M3 Touring’s absence in North America, or perhaps enthusiasts will still long for the uncompromising wagon. Do you believe the X3M is worthy of consideration as a legitimately enthusiast-oriented family crossover, or is it just another dull, pudgy hatchback on stilts that leaves much to be desired?
