MOTOCROSS ACTION MID-WEEK REPORT

Rider: Broc Tickle

Broc Tickle was another amateur phenom who had a successful career in the professional ranks. He raced Loretta Lynn’s eight times and was able to win in his final year at the ranch in the 250 A class. When he made the step into the professional ranks, he rode for DNA Yamaha but did not see success early on. It took two years for Broc to grab his first podium which came in 2009. In 2011 he switched to Pro Circuit Kawasaki and started to shine. Though he had a win in 2010, he became much more consistent on the new team, grabbing a podium in seven Supercross races and claimed the championship that year. When he moved up to big bikes he was still a front runner and bounced around teams year to year. However Broc ended up getting in some trouble with the WADA (World Anti Doping Agency) after he was tested at a race and they did not like the results. Though Broc appealed their decision after he did not know what would throw off the test, the AMA and WADA dragged on the appeal, month after month Broc had to wait. When he was able to retest they failed him again. Though Broc was not necissarly doing sports enhancing medicine, something in his routine they did not like. Broc decided to step away from professional racing, and can still be seen today testing bikes for Kawasaki.

ON TO THE FINAL

Jett Lawrence has set himself up well headed into the final race of the season. With now a twenty-point lead over Cooper Webb, Jett needs to just make it through the main event to claim the victory. For a rookie, this is a huge building block for an even more successful career. Though he raced the 250 class in Supercross, Jett Lawrence was both the 2023 motocross champion as well as the 2023 Super Motocross champion to cap things off. Now setting himself up well headed back into motocross it will be interesting if anyone like Eli Tomac can put a stop to his dominance.

ALL TIED UP

RJ Hampshire and Levi Kitchen are tied up heading into Salt Lake this weekend, making it a winner-take-all race. The rider who places in the better position will take the championship away from the other. RJ Hampshire has had experience in the 250 class and has battled for championships in the past. Levi Kitchen has had a breakout year with tremendous speed, putting multiple wins under his belt. With a crash in Nashville, Kitchen persevered through and kept his championship hopes alive. It will all be settled this weekend.

FIRST WIN ON HONDA

Jo Shimoda had been building momentum through the final rounds of the 250 West series. He has had quite a bit of speed but has been struggling with his starts all season long. In Denver, his luck changed as he was able to grab the holeshot and never look back. Towards the end of the main event, Shimoda did feel the pressure from Levi Kitchen and RJ Hampshire who were behind him. Shimoda was able to stay mentally strong and mistake-free, taking his first win of the season.

MXA FANTASY LEAGUE: THE WINNER OF THE DENVER SUPERCROSS SCORED 272 POINTS

A great night of racing made for tough picks in the MXA Fantasy League. Jo Shimoda who was not a common choice in the app to be the winner fought hard and took home his first win of the year and first win on board the Factory HRC Honda. In the 450 class, Jett Lawrence was a more common pick to be the evening winner and he came out victorious. After struggling on previous weekends, Hunter Lawrence was able to finish second on the evening, making the brothers the first to ever finish one and two in a Supercross main event.

THE WINNER OF THE DENVER FANTASY LEAGUE “ENZO”

“ENZO” Had the best picks for the 2024 Denver Supercross scoring 272 points in the process. As the Supercross season winds down, we look into the upcoming motocross season where we will have more awesome prizes to give away, and the user with the most points by the end of the 2024 Super Motocross season will win a brand new Triumph 250.

250 CLASS PREDICTIONS

Enzo had some great picks for the 250 class. He chose RJ Hampshire to take the win and Hampshire ended up third in the race, this gave 21 fantasy points but no bonus for the pick. In second he chose Levi Kitchen who did finish second in the race and was able to gain him 33 points including the ten-point bonus. In third, he chose Jordon Smith who finished fifth on the night and gained him another 18 points for the pick. In fourth, he chose Nate Thrasher who did end up fourth in the race giving him 28 points including the ten-point bonus. In fifth he chose Jo Shimoda who won the race giving 26 points for the pick but again no bonus. And in sixth he chose Julien Beaumer who finished tenth in the event giving no bonus points.

450 CLASS PREDICTIONS

In the 450 class, Enzo chose Jett Lawrence to take the win. Jett Lawrence came through giving him a full 36 points including the ten-point bonus. In second he chose Chase Sexton who had some bad luck during the race and finished in eighth giving no points on the day. In third, he chose Jason Anderson who has actually been on a roll of third-place finishes giving 31 points including the ten-point bonus. In fourth, he chose Hunter Lawrence who placed second in the race giving 23 points for the result. In fifth he chose Cooper Webb who did finish fifth in the race giving 28 points including the ten-point bonus. And in sixth he chose Justin Cooper who also got sixth in the race giving a full 27 points including the ten-point bonus. Compared to last weekend’s winner, there was a thirty-point difference showing that you still can make up positions late in the season as well as through motocross.

SUPERCROSS POINTS HEADING INTO THE FINAL ROUND OF THE 2024 SUPERCROSS SERIES

In the 250 West series, Levi Kitchen and RJ Hampshire are tied heading into the final race of the 2024 Supercross season, which happens to be an East/West shootout. The last time the two coasts clashed both Levi Kitchen and Cameron McAdoo found themselves on the ground and the points lead for both riders slipping from their grasp. Cameron McAdoo who was racing East was unable to finish the event and has been out of the remaining races as he focuses on healing for motocross. Levi Kitchen put in a valiant effort to recover any points possible, leaving Nashville with a two-point deficit. In Denver, Kitchen was able to beat RJ Hampshire by one position, tying things up as they head into the final, which will be an all-out battle.

ASK THE MXPERTS: THE MOST POPULAR GOGGLE OF ALL-TIME

Jody says that he hopes you aren’t looking to buy a pair of Carrera 98 Racing goggles because they are very rare, which is, odd because literally every Pro and amateur racer in the early 1970s wore Carrera 98 goggles. They retailed for $8.95 with three lenses (clear, dark or yellow) and came in a choice of white or black frames. In 2023 dollars, that would be $55. The white frames were the most popular—and everyone who was anyone wore white Carreras—except for Roger DeCoster, who had a sponsorship deal with Baruffaldi goggles.

The Carrera 98s were as minimal as a goggle could get. The top of the frame connected to the lens with snaps, while the bottom of the frame was not connected to the top of the frame. They were very flexible—some might say flimsy—not to mention that they did a very poor job of keeping dust out of your eyes because the gap between the top and bottom of the frame was 1 inch wide and was not blocked off by any foam. The strap was 3/4 of an inch wide and had a clasp to tighten the goggle to your face, which was needed, because over time the elastic would stretch out and lose its tension.

There has never been another goggle brand that dominated the starting lines like Carrera 98 (and nobody got paid to wear them).
