BUYER’S GUIDE: 2024 TURBOCHARGED SIDE-BY-SIDES

2024 TURBOCHARGED SIDE-BY-SIDES

All the turbos that are fit to spin By the staff of Dirt Wheels

Can-Am turbocharged its Maverick 1000R V-twin for model year 2015 and introduced the X3 Turbo line in 2017. Polaris and Can-Am have been waging the horsepower war ever since, with their top guns now being the RZR Turbo R and Maverick R. Yamaha and Honda offer dealer-installed turbo kits for the YXZ1000R and Talon 1000s, but no SxS with standard turbocharging. Segway joins the horsepower war with its new-for-2024 Super Villain with a turbocharged, 2,000cc hybrid producing 330 horsepower. Here are the 2024 extreme-performance UTVs with OEM turbos.

CAN-AM MAVERICK R/MAVERICK R X

New for 2024, Can-Am unleashes the next generation of turbocharged Mavericks with an all-new 999T triple producing 240 horsepower mated to a seven-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission, plus Rs have high and low ranges. Dual injectors per cylinder and a 54mm turbo mounted directly to the engine block give the new Maverick more power per liter than most supercars. Shifting can be manual via paddle shifters, or the computer selects gears in Auto mode, along with drive modes of Normal, Sport or Sport+. Suspension is also next level with massive lower arms and high knuckles and arched upper arms. New four-link trailing arms still have three pairs of radius rods with one set adjusting the toe and the top ones attaching to the high knuckles. Travel is 25 inches front and rear, and hubs are six lugs. Front calipers are 32mm triple puck, while rears are 30mm twin-piston, and rotors are 265mm. Wheels are 15-inch flow-formed aluminum beadlocks, and Rs come with ITP Tenacity XNR 30×10-15 on all four corners. The Smart-Lok front diff has a new electronic diff disconnect, so it freewheels when the driver slams on the brakes. The cockpit is also next level with an all-new dash with more accessory-switch cutouts, 10.25-inch screen navigation, and more storage; the new D-shaped steering wheel tilts and telescopes. New doors have outer releases, plus the nylon strap inners.
Maverick Rs sport Fox Podium 2.5 QS3 shocks and Catalyst Grey and Neo Yellow colors, but a roof is not standard. Maverick R X also has Fox Podium 2.5 QS3 piggyback shocks, but adds bottom-out control, a roof, four-point harnesses, a rear camera and Legion Red/Triple Black paint.

CAN-AM MAVERICK R X RS/MAVERICK R X RS SMART-SHOX

New for 2024, Can-Am unleashes the next generation of turbocharged Mavericks with an all-new 999T triple producing 240 horsepower mated to a seven-speed Dual Clutch Transmission, plus Rs have High and Low ranges. Wheelbase is 108 inches and ground clearance is 17 inches. A new fuel tank holds 13.2 gallons of gasoline, and a 1700-watt magneto powers many accessories. A new bed holds 200 pounds of cargo, and there is 2.1 gallons of storage with a center-dash cell-phone holder. The front bumper is made to mount a 4,500-pound winch (not included).
Maverick R X rs models upgrade to Fox Podium RC2 shocks with dual-speed compression adjusters, plus rebound adjustment, along with tunable preload and crossover heights. Tires are ITP Tenacity XNR 32×10-16 on 16-inch aluminum beadlocks, and front and rear cameras project to the 10.25-inch infotainment screen. X-package graphics are also standard; colors are Triple Black or Carbon Black/Neo Yellow. Maverick R X RS with Smart-Shox upgrades to Can-Am’s Gen 3.0 Smart-Shox with dual-valve compression and rebound electronically adjusted with Fox Podium 2.5 front and 3.0 rear shocks. R X rs models also get a rear-view mirror, and Smart-Shox has the same color choices.

CAN-AM MAVERICK X3 RS TURBO RR/X3 X RS TURBO RR/SMART-SHOX

The 2024 Maverick X3 rs Turbo RR/X3 X rs Turbo RR/Smart-Shox are 72 inches wide with 200 horsepower, an improved pDrive roller clutch for quicker throttle response and acceleration, and stronger frame and suspension. Smart-Shox models add Can-Am’s fully self-adjustable, computer-controlled suspension that controls both compression and rebound damping. Smart-Shox technology makes real-time automatic suspension adjustments, improving vehicle stability and providing excellent control with flatter cornering. It reduces front and rear bouncing, while minimizing vehicle body movement, adjusting automatically to any type of terrain. The system offers three driving modes: Comfort, Sport or Sport+.
